Juliette Cannata has won the 2010 Diane Feldman Technical Editing SIG Undergraduate Scholarship. Juliette is a student at St. Edward’s University, where she is majoring in English Writing and Rhetoric. For the past two years, Juliette has worked as the Global Response Team Intern for Tivoli Software in Austin, Texas. She is responsible for editing and publishing Tivoli Field Guides, which are technical documents that address specific technical scenarios or concepts. She is also responsible for editing general documents such as reports, presentations, and memos. After graduating, Juliette plans to work as a grant writer and enroll in a graduate program in rhetoric. Her career goal is to be technical writing consultant and professor of technical communication and rhetoric. Congratulations Juliette!

Carie Lambert has won the 2010 Diane Feldman Technical Editing SIG Graduate Scholarship. Carie is a student at Texas Tech University, where she is pursuing her PhD in Technical Communication and Rhetoric. Carie has worked for 15 years as a technical writer, editor, and communication consultant with nurses, physicians, researchers, and educators. Her experience has taught her a great deal about surgery, gynecology, internal medicine, and endocrinology as well as the publishing industry and the grant-application process. In her doctoral studies, she is focusing on medical rhetoric with an emphasis on ethics, online patient communities, and oncology-related communication. She is also working as an editorial assistant for Technical Communication Quarterly, a premier scholarly journal in the field of technical communication. After she graduates, Carie plans to teach at a research-focused university and continue her technical communication work in the health sciences. Congratulations Carie!

Juliette and Carie were each awarded $800.00 from the STC Technical Editing SIG. Applicants were judged on their work experience, career goals, significant achievements, research project, resume quality, letters of recommendation, and grade point average.

Jeanette Buenger has won the special one-time scholarship funded by the Caroline Chapter. This year, the Carolina Chapter of the STC partnered with the Technical Editing SIG to award this special one-time scholarship to a graduate student in honor of Diane Feldman, a long-time STC and Technical Editing SIG member who passed away this spring. Diane Feldman was an Associate Fellow of STC and was the manager of the Technical Editing SIG for seven years. Through unwavering dedication and leadership, she successfully re-chartered and re-focused the SIG in difficult times, ultimately initiating a thriving and growing SIG. She also mentored many of the SIG leaders throughout their tenures, leaving a lasting mark on those leaders and their careers.

This year’s scholarship judges identified Jeanette as the applicant who best exemplifies Diane’s leadership, contributions, and enthusiasm for the field of technical editing. Jeanette is pursuing a post-baccalaureate certificate in multimedia writing and technical communication at Arizona State University. For ten years, she has been an active STC member, serving on the board of the Phoenix Chapter for three of those years. She has also helped create educational programs for the Chapter through her winning of a $1000 grant from Lockhead Martin. Jeanette has mentored and trained technical writers and editors, and she plans to continue to do so as an STC member and technical editing professional in the medical field.

Jeanette was awarded $800.00 from the Carolina Chapter.
